About Minerals North

Minerals North is a community-hosted event that brings industry, Indigenous communities, government, and northern businesses together around responsible resource development. In 2027, the Terrace & District Chamber of Commerce will host Minerals North in Terrace, BC, during the city’s centennial year.

A community-hosted conference since 1989

The first northern BC minerals conference was held in Terrace in 1989; the name “Minerals North” was adopted at the third conference, in Stewart in 1991. Each year a different northern BC community hosts and organizes the event, bringing together residents from across the north, including a growing number from First Nation communities, mining and exploration companies, service providers, and local and provincial politicians.

The conference gives local communities a chance to show their capacity to serve the mineral industry, helps community leaders learn about the economic and policy issues facing the sector, and keeps industry informed of local issues and community goals.

The Minerals North Conference Association

Minerals North is the non-profit association that facilitates the hosting of the annual conference. It was incorporated as a British Columbia not-for-profit society in January 2011. Conference surpluses have been given back to northern education and community initiatives, including mining bursaries, college and university programs, and geoscience work in the Terrace area.

Mining in Northwest BC: a short history

Mining in Northwest BC takes place on the territories of many First Nations, including the Tsimshian (among them Kitselas and Kitsumkalum), Nisga’a and Tahltan Nations. The Nations’ own histories of these lands are theirs to tell.
